Otago, continued to-day in fine weathers The wicket and outfield were in excellent condition. Otago's first innings realised 278, one of the features being the fine last wicket - partnership between Dickinson and Casey. The former, though ■slightly reckless, put on 51 in great style. Cecil Alloo and Keast opened Otago's innings to the bowling of, Player. Alloo hit a three and two fours in the first over. Keast did not seem ' to be at home to Anthony and went out to a leg-break after scoring one: —I—l. McMullan joined Alloo and the 1 pair made a good stand. Cummings replaced Player and Gillespie, Anthony, with the ball, but it was not until the^score had been carried to 90 > that the partnership was severed'. C. 'Alloo at 55 played Gillespie on to his wicket in attempting to cut: 90—2—55. Both hit fours all round the wicket and their running between the wickets was good to watch. Gillespie bowled the first maiden of the day to McMullan after an hour's play. 0. "Alloo reached his halfcentury in 59 minutes. A. Alloo followed his brother"' to. the crease. McMullan was not slow in following Cecil Alloo, being smartly stumped off Cummings' second ball by W. Garrard, who was giving a fine display behind tho stumps: 90—3—32. Galland was the next man and he and A. Alloo also gave a fine display of running between the wickets. The century went up after 76 minutes' play. At 118 Anthony replaced Gillespie and at 120 Player replaced Cummings. The change slowed down the scoring and for a while only singles /were scored. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 134 for three wickets Player Proves Expensive. On resuming, Anthony and Player changed ends. Alloo hit three fours and a' single off Player's first over and Galland also scored a single off the over. The board showed 150 after 123 minutes' play. Anthony's first two overs .were maidens, but Player was rather expensive, his firstthree overs costing 31. Anthony's next over resulted in Galland going out to a straight ball. His 48 took 65 minutes- to make: 168—4—48. , Duncan was the next man. . At 175 Horspool replaced Player and Duncan hit two off his first ball. Soon after Duncan was brilliantly thrown out by BrookSmith: 177—5—4. Knight, the incomer, was clean bowled first ball by Anthony: 577 —6—o. . Ghadwick, the next man, scored six quickly and then gave a simple chance to Player at point which was accepted: 193—7—6. Dickinson was the next at the crease. Then Alloo got to the bowling again, and 200 went up after 173 minutes' play. A moment later A. Alloo reached his halfcentury, after having been at the crease 110 minutes. Dickinson gave a chance in the slips to Horspool, but it was not accepted. At 212 A. Alloo's wicket fell lbw to Anthony. Auckland's Total Passed. Dickinson and Mcßeath each hit singles off Player and brought Otago up to Auckland's total. Dickinson sent Player's next ball for four and placed Otago in the lead amid applause. Dickinson continued merrily but lost his partner at 231, Mc : Beatb being smartly stumped off Gillespie by Garrard: 231—., ,'■ • Casey was the last. man. Horspool relieved Anthony. As in the case of Auckland's innings, the last wicket partnership provided some of the brightest cricket of the day and was responsible for 47 runs i Burton took the ball from Gillespie and Paterson from Horspool. Dickinson reached his half-century in 51 minutes, about the fastest scoring of the day. At 278 Casey was clean bowled by Paterson: 278—10—18. Cummings and Brook-Smith opened Auckland's second innings to the bowling of Mcßeath and Dickinson. Chadwick was unable to play for Otago, Galland taking his place . as wicket-keeper, and Conradi fielding. At 14 Cummings was clean-bowled by Dickinson: 14—17. Paterson was next, but at 20 BrookSmith's wicket fell lbw to Mcßeath: 20— 2—B. Horspool followed to crease., and A. Alloo took the ball from Dickinson and clean-bowled Paterson first ball: 48—3— 20. Anthony was 'next.' At 77 Casey took the.ball from Mcßeath, who went on at the other end next over. Anthony and Horspool made a good stand and added 40 to the score, the partnership being severed at 88,' when Dickinson smartlv took Horspool Off Casey at second slip: 88—4—31.
