ITALY'S NEW POLICY.
EFFECT OF PARIS RUPTURE. i ALIGNMENT WITH FRANCE. i■ ■'■■'' ' NEGOTIATING AN ENTENTE. By Telegraph—Press Association— (Received 9,5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. Jan. G. The Messagero states that the break-, down of the Reparation Conference is producing an important Franco-Italian rapprochement. Italy in the p a sfc relied too much on Britain's friendship, but Mr. Lloyd George's declaration produced nothing. France blundered in neglecting Italy too much. Conversations toward a Franco-Italian political and economic understanding have already begun. The Marquis della Torreta, the Italian representative, who took part in presenting a compromise scheme to the conference, which was rejected, stated in an interview that Italy would remain in close relations with France. ISOLATION OF BRITAIN. LONDON PRESS MISGIVINGS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 4.5 p.m.) ~.- LONDON, Jan. 6. The Daily Mail, in a leader, says the apparent failure of the conference leaves Britain on the threshold of an entirely new situation, which is no better than the old one. For the first time in twenty years Britain is relatively isolated in the Old World. The nation will not relish the first excursion of the new Government into international affairs. It will not approve of parting company with France on reparations. This distressing break is bound to react unfavourably on the Lausanne Conference, and will not help in getting money from Germany. It throws a bar on the restoration of stability in Europe.
