The Manawatu Racing Club's Summer Meeting was opened at Awapuni to-day in fine weather. A big crowd was present throughout the day. The racing was good, and ttie majority of the finishes were olose The principal event of the day, the Manawatu Cup. was a siow-run race and Paoanui won by only a head at the. finish. Merry Day and festivity were a trifle unlucky, and though Mai'queteur ran a good race lie wa-3 • never well placed. The chief sprint event saw a great contest between Chimeia and Jrapukaf in which the former triumphed 'commenced with the Trial Plate. I for which Kilroe and Allmanmba were the favourites. Bouny Louisa was first to turn i lor home, and she wan joined immediately by Allmarimba, who had gone round the held and made up lout ground very fast. ! Turning out of the straight Dissertation took command, and she led down the buck, followed by Paoanui. Admiral Codrington. and Bonnie Heather with Marnuetcur well back and Scotch Mixture last. Racing to tho homo turn, the field closed up somewhat. Dissertation and Paoanui were hard at it below the distance. 5 and at the distance they were joined by Merry Day. A great finish saw Paoanui beat Dissertation by a head, with Merry Day half a neck away third. Festivity was fourth and Marqueteur flft The Nursery Handicap «roved to he a good thing for tho favourite Civilitv who was early in the lead, attended by Blonde. In the straight Civility went away and won nicely by threo lengths from Benmuro. Blonde finished fourth. _ __ Waipatu, Good Mark, and Happy Days were entrusted with most of the money m the Tararua Welter, and all ran good races. Pink Rose was on the move when the barker lifted and ouickly rushed into tho led. There was some delay at the barrier, but a good release was' obtained. Jackaroo and Ambitious made most of the running to the straight, with Chimera in behind them. Chimera took charge below the distance, and was challenged by Irapuka. but Chimera was alwavs going a shade the better of the pair, and she beat. Irapuka home by a head. Valerie was three-quarters of a length away, third, and Ambitious was fourth. . Striking trouble going out of the straight, she wns nearly down, and when her rider cot her balanced attain she was one of the rear division. Barrv did not bustle her, but with a couple of handv -runs along the back he made up a deal of the lost ground. Nearintr the straight, she was still far from well placed, but once heads were turned for home she cut down the leaders in great style.
