DEFEAT, OF CANTERBURY. EIGHT-WIO3CET VICTORY. A CENTURY TO BLUNT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PIU2S3 ASSOCIATION.] CHEISTCHDKCH. Tuesday. The match between the M.C.C. cricket team and Canterbury concluded to-day in glorious sunny weather on a fast batsmen's wicket and before a fair crowd. The play was remarkable for a fine firstwicket stand by Blunt and Worker, who put on 208 before Worker left. Then before the fine bowling of Gibson the side collapsed, and was all out for 295. Gibson's figures were one wicket for 35 when the first wicket fell, and he finished up with eight wickets for 57. The visitors won bv eight wickets. Blunt played a fine innings for his 174. He was slow at the start, but once lie had played himself in ho scored fairly rapidly, putting the wood on to all loos® balls. *He gave four chances, three of them so hard as to bo chances and no more. He was three hours 32 minutes at the wicket, and hit 25 fours. Worker also played a sterling innings, scoring all round the wicket, but wa3 not so aggressive as Blunt. Progress of tho Play. The score stood at 30 when play was resumed this morning, Gibson and Ualthorpo bowling. The scoring was slow, and tho first 10 overs brought four runs and seven maidens. At 46 Hartley relieved Calthorpe, and runs came more quicklv, chicflv through the agency of Blunt." When'he was 46 ho hit one very hard to MacLaren at closo cover off Hartlev, and then nearly played him on. Brand relieved Gibson, 'and Blunt ran into the fifties. Tho fielding was good, Chapman especially doing smart work. At 58 Blunt put another hot one to Wilson at closo cover, a boundary resulting. Tho scoro mounted fairly rapidly, and the century appeared for 105 minutes plav. Blunt, when 70, gave a chanco behind the sticks off Calthorpe. Blunt, hitting hard and often, reached the century in 132 minutes, while Worker took 138 minutes to get to 50. At. 53 he gave a very hot one-handed chanco to Brand. The scoro at lunch was 187, Blunt being 127 and Worker 53. Blunt Loses His Partner. After the adjournment Blunt poked an easv one hack to Hartley, but- tho bowler misjudged it. Both men piled on the runs, and the second century was hoisted at the end of 166 minutes' plav. Eight runs later Worker, in attempting to drive, sent one back to Gibson. 207—1—65. Smith was clean bowled by Gibson without scoring. 208—2—0. Hayes came noxt, and Blunt went on scoring rapidly, arid 250 appeared as tho result of 205 minutes' play. A full toss from Brand bowled Hayos. .253 —3 —6. Patrick followed, to see Gibson clean bowl Blunt. 255 —4—174. Young was next, and Patrick immediately played Gibson into his wickets. 262-—5 —O" Sandman soon came to grief, caught by Wilkinson at short leg. 278—6 —8. Thomas was clean bowled second ball. 278-7—o. Bead stayed for an over, and then Gibson bowled him. 282 —3—o. Rix did likewise. 292—9 —0. Young was batting well, but no one could stay with him, and when Brunton was bowled by Brand the score was 295, or 22 ahead of tho Englishmen's total, j The innings had lasted four hours 26 minutes. England's Second Venture. The Englishmen, requiring 23 to win, opened with Titchmarsh and Lowry. They quickly hit up 20, and then Blunt took the former smartly in the slips. 20—1—10. Hill-Wood was next. Lowry equalled the scores, and was then smartly stumped off Sandman. 21 —2—12. Wilkinson came, in and finished tho game with a single, (he Englishmen winning" by eight wickets.
