DACRE'S GREAT INNINGS. ROWNTREE SAVES 'EXTRAS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. j After opening in the Plunket Shield match in a manner which gave promise of an even better total than Wellington, Auckland failed to reach their opponent's tally by 49 runs. Feature? of the Auckland innings were the brilliant batting display given by Snedden and Dacre. The Auckland captain played a particularly useful innings, playing in Auckland's best interests. Dacre was brilliant and forceful, treating the Wellington bowling with little respect on Christmas Day. To-day he was unable, to get going properly, and added only five to his over-night tally. Horspool and Anthony, who opened for Auckland, were never comfortable. Smith played attractive cricket, and MeLeod, Garrard, and Alcott all contributed useful tallies. The Wellington bowling was not firstclass by any means, Hiddleston finishing with the best average, and Brice taking most of the wickets. The fielding generally was smrtrt, although Dacre was badly dropped by Kortlang when only 69. The second innings of tho homo team opened disastrously, Baker, Bernau, and Hiddlegton all being dismissed cheaply. At ono stago three wickets were down for 21 runs, but Kortlang, Collins, and Dempster saved the situation by careful batting. Kortlang was badly injured, and had to retire, but, despite his injury, hatted attractively on his return. Collins played patiently for the century, and was only aggressive toward the close. Dempster was inclined to be aggressive. Smith bowled well, as did Garrard Rowntree, despite an injury, was brilliant behind the stumps, as the figures i show. 1 The match will bo resumed to-morrow
