EMPIRE AND SEA SPIRIT.

TWO INTERDEPENDENT.

LORD JELLICOE'S REMARKS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WANGAiNrtJI. Wednesday.

Some pertinent remarks concerning the future prospects of the mercantile marine were made this afternoon by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Jellicoe, when emphasising the importance of the sea scout movement. It was very desirable, he said, to instil the sea spirit into the minds of youths. They would then grow up to love the sea and enter into the marine service. Unless the sea spirit was present, it was certain that the Empire would come to grief. Without British sailors, they would have to depend on foreign mercantile services to carry their products, and he asked all concerned to think what would happen in war-time unless the Empire was going to breed seamen. It might just as wed shut up shop. If the sea spirit was encouroged in a boy, he would want to go to sea to earn his living. If the mercantile marine carried out its traditions as splendidly as during the war, the prosperity of the Empire would bo assured.
