SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
D. HADFIELD'S CHALLENGE.
APPEAL FOR FUNDS ORGANISED.
The challenge which Mr. Darcy Hadfield desires to make for regaining the world's sculling championship, now held by James Paddon, the Australian, was the subject of a meeting held last evening in the Town Hall concert chamber. The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, presided. The meeting was convened to appoint a committee and trustees for the purpose of raising a guarantee fund to enable Mr. Hadfield to put in his challenge and carry out the requisite training. Mr.' Hadfield, in explaining his position, said that under a good trainer he had no doubt he could regain the title for New Zealand. To moke the challenge £600 would have to be put up, and training and visiting Australia would entail an* other £500. He had been well supported by the Wanganui people, who were again willing to find £600 toward the amount needed. That meant that only £400 had to be raised either in Auckland or in the rest of New Zealand.
It was agreed that those present should form themselves into a committee to organise an appeal for funds. The Mayor was appointed chairman, Mr. W. H. Murray deputy-chairman, and Mr. W. Pearce hon. secretary. The Mayor, the Hon. Georgo Fowlds, and Mr. Murray are to act as trustees. It was agreed that subscriptions should forthwith be asked for, and that those acting on behalf of Mr. Hadfield in Wanganui should be informed that the Auckland collection was in hand. A further motion was to the effect that in the event of Mr. Hadfield winning, those who contributed to the fund should, if they desired, have their subscription refunded, less any expenses incurred.
