WELCOME RAIN IN N.S.W.
FEARS OF DROUGHT ENDED. [from our own correspondent.] SYDNEY, Oct. 26. After a dry spell lasting for several months a complete change in weather conditions throughout New South Waleu has taken place. During Tuesday la3t rain commenced to fajl in the -west, and extending eastward the rainstorm embraced practically the whole, area of the State during the 24 hours ended 9 a,m. yesterday. The area benefiting from' the rain until yesterday morning took in almost every portion of the State with the exception of the North Coast and Northern Tablelands, but information received in Sydney yesterday showed that the area had extended eastward and that good rain was being received nearer the coast. In many parts the fall will be of in» calculable benefit to, the languishing crops and pastures, and in supplying water for stock and domestic purposes. While the rain comes too late to save a considerable proportion of the wheat in the central j west and parts of the North Coast, it may easily make a difference of five bushels per acre to much of the balance, and the plants bad in many cises reached a critical stage. At this time even 10 or 20 points may make a, marked difference. Even in Eastern Riverina, from which uniformly good reports had been received till within the past week, some areaii ware experiencing a decided setback. A particularly pleasing feature of the rain is the saving that it w?ll mean to pastoralists, -who have been forced of late to send to the metropolis for feed, in view of the continued dry spell. With the. coming of rain on Tuesday, and its continuance yesterday, telegrams began to come down to Sydney yesterday to cancel arrangements that had been made for feed. Trucks which had been ordered, Wing to the scarcity of feed, were cancelled, and in many instances the pastoralist reported having received good rain.
