Fire completely destroyed Antrim Castle, the home of Viscount Massereene and Ferrard, including its famous collection of treasures. The Speaker's chair, used in tho pre-TJnion Irish House of Commons, and priceless historic documents perished. Tho Viscount and his family and members of a house party escaped scantily clothed. The servants were rescued with great difficulty by ladders. A maid named Gilligan was scorched, and died after removal.
