WAIUKU BRANCH RAILWAY.

IMPROVEMENTS DESIRED. DEPUTATION TO MR. McVILLY [BE TBr.EGBAPH.--OWN COEEBSPOJTOBKT.J WMTJKTJ, Monday. The General Manager of Hallways, Mr. R. W. McVilly, in company with several heads of the department, paid a visit to Waiuku to-day, arriving'by special train at 11.45 aJm.' Mr. lileVilly was welcomed at the station by members of the Town Board and Chamber of Commercei and other prominent citizens. During a three-quartera' of an hour stay Mr. McVilly received a deputation concerning proposed improvements in the time-table on the Waiuku branch. • A request was made that the exfress from Botorua and Thames stop at aerata on Tuesdays, Fridays;, and Saturdays, the days on which the afternoon train runs from Paerata to Waiuku. The provision of a platform and goods" shed at Fernleigh, a busy station ne&r Waiuku, was requested. The president of the Chamber of Commerce asked that the departure of the morning train from Waiulra to Paerata, at present leaving at 6.20 a.m., be delayed until 7.30- or 8 a.m., and that the train be ruq through to Papakura to connect with suburban trains there. Mr. McVilly stated that as the branch had already lost £1100 this year it was not probable that any great alterations in the matter of increasing the service could be made at present. The department must try to suit the interests of the general public rather than the convenience of a few individuals. For that reason he did nr>t approve of •*the proposed alteration in the departure of the morning train. Ho promised.to do his best regarding the stopping of the express at Paerata, but could not hold out much hope in that direction. With regard to a goods shed at Fernleigh, Mr. McVilly said that the residents of the district must first convince the Auckland district manager that the shed was more necessary there than at Pukeoware, where one is now situated.
