HENDERSON TOWN BOARD.
THE LONELY BACK BLOCKS.
Sir,—ln these days of retrenchment it is disquieting to find this newly-consti-tuted board committing itself to _ heavy secretarial expenses. With a rate income of £900 the board commits itself to the expenditure of £190 of this amount to clerical work, viz., clerk £100 and 10 per cent, to the Waitemata County Council for collection oi rates, £30. The position is rendered more invidious when ccmpared with like financial obligations of a neighbouring town board (Glen Eden), £50 for secretarial work, llowick Town Board was constituted later than Henderson ; yet the former board foresees the expediency of collecting its rates. Why could the Henderson Town Board not act likewise? Economx.
Sir, —I was much interested in an article, "Back-blocks Women,'* which appo&red in your paper on October 10. Some vears ago I belonged to a let.tci guild m England, which did real good work in bringing cheer into many a lonely heart and homo. Might not something of tho same sort of thing be started in Auckland? I for one would be only too pleased to write a frieudly letter to one or two of these lonely and isolated ones in tho back blocks fortnightly, i am rare there are others who would do the same. If anyone wishes to know what constitutes a letter guild I snail be pleased to tell them. K. E. Dams.
