BRIDGE AT KINGSLAND.

DEPARTMENT'S ATTITUDE.

COUNCIL TO FIND £10,000.

ALTERNATIVE PROPOSALS.

Thte matter of the Kingsland overbridge was again before the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, when the Hon. C. J. Pan*, member for the district, forwarded a letter from the General Manager of Railways, Mr. R. W. McVilly. Mr. McVilly stated that he had again gone into the matter. The estimated cost of works to be done was £23,000, and with the hope that an early settlement would be come to, he was prepared to definitely fix the council's payment at £10,000. Below that he was not prepared to go.

Alternatively, the department was prepared to (1) Construct a road bridge 66ft. wide, at the site near the Methodist Church; (2) construct a foot overbridge and ramps at Onslow Road, and a footbridge and ramps at Edendalo Road; (3) dedicate for road purposes the land necessary to provide a 66ft. roadway from New North Road to Clark Street, and a 66ft. road from Onslow Road, connecting therewith. Tho council would, in that case, have to undertake at its own cost the formation, metalling, etc., of the new road between Now North Road and Clark Street, in line with the proposed bridge, including the approaches to the new footbridge. If the council decided to adopt this suggestion it might determine that at the outset it would bo unnecessary to form the new roads to the full width of 66ft., and in that way could reduce the immediate cost. In either case, the council woidd, of course, require to undertake to closo both Onslow Road and Edendale Road at the railway crossings. Tho Mayor, Mr. A. F. Bennett, said it was evidently a question of rinding the money or looking for another route for the tramways. He considered that Edendale Road had a greater claim for tramway extension than, the Great South Koad. As an alternative route, Burnloy Terrace might be seriously considered. Consideration of the matter was deferred till next meeting.
