TARIFF RECIPROCITY.
AUSTRALIAN EXEMPTION. NO FREE ENTRY FOR OATS. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Oct. 13. The Minister for Customs moved in the House to-day that the following items in the reciprocal trade m agreement with New Zealand be ratified:—Preserved meats in tins, 2d; sheets and roofing slates, cement, asbestos, ad valorem 10 per cent.; dairying machines and implements, free; corn millet brooms, ad valorem 30 per cent. The Minister explained that there would bo a split on two items. Australia deFired free entry into New Zealand for dried fruits, particularly ,currants and raisiins, while New Zealand would agree only on condition that New Zealand was allowed free entry for oats. He was not prepared to surrender Australian oatgrowew to competition, even if the dried fruit market should be lost as a result. The resolution with the accompanying Bill was passed through all its stages.
