BOWLING.

NEW SEASON COMMENCED. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONIES. A number of the city and suburban bowling greens were officially opened for the season on Saturday. Unlike other games there iB no day fired for the opening of the bowling season, the various clubs formally opening their respective greens on days convenient for members, and with a view to prevent clashing as far as possible with the opening ceremonies of other clubs. Saturday's functions were the first to take place this season; other clubit will hold the official ceremony next Saturday and the following week-end. The opening of the Ponsonby Club's gveen, which was fixed for- last Saturday, was postponed for a week owing to recent rains. WEST END CLUB. The official opening of the West End Club's green was well attended. The proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem, and the president. Mr. A. E. Whitten, welcomed the visitorfl. He expreeßed regret that the club had lost the services of the green superintendent, Mr. J. Colthurst, who had been transferred to the South Island. The secretary, Mr. A. J. Morton, would also >be leaving the district shortly. The president also mentioned that the Dominion tournament would be held in Auckland this year, and he hoped the club's representatives would uphold the prestige of the club, as they had done at past tournaments. Mrs. Whitten then rolled the silver jack, and t£e green was declared open for play. Afternoon tes. was dispensed by the ladies' committee. Fowlds, and representatives from many other clubs. The president, Mr. J. P. Blair . welcomed the visitors. He also referred to the rapidly ' increasing membership of the club, and expressed the hope that the coming season would be the most successful in the club's history. ONEHUNGA CLUB. The Onehunga Club celebrated its twentieth anniversary on Saturday, when the greens wers offioially opened tor the season. In the absence of the president, Mr. E. V. Sutherland, the ceremony was performed by Mr, T. Bassett. who expressed the hope that members would have a' most enjoyable season. He, extended a hearty -welcome to the large number of visitors present. The medal for the winner of the first year championship was presented to Mr. H. Williams. The first jack was thrown by Miss Euth Sutherland and the green was declared open. TAKAPUNA CLUB. The official opening of the Takapuna Bowling Club's green was held on Saturday in the presence of n. record number of members and visiting bowlers. The president, Mr. Williamson, said it.was a good omen for the club to see the number of new members joining this. year, many of them being old bowlers, who had come to live in the suburb. Thanks were due to the untiring efforts of the green, superintendent, Mr. B. Codd, and the. green keeper, Mr. Lee, for providing a good claying area for the coming season. Mr. Williamson threw kitty and trundled the first bowl, the green then being declared open. The results of games played during the afternoon are as follow:—

The opening of the Waitemata Bowling Club s greens took place on Saturday at Northcote, the function jjroving very successful and enjoyable. The president, Mr. John Potter, explained that t;be opening celebrated the eighteenth anniversary of the club, and the opportunity was taken to havo a reunion of present playing and honorary members with the past members of the club, many, of whom were now residing in other districts. The preseut members owed a debt of gratitude to the founders and earlier members, who had a herculean tar.k I in establishing the club and bringing it to such a successful position. The ladies .of the Croquet Club had also been included in the invitation to the opening function. He wished to emphasise, the appreciation of the interest and assistance the croquet ladies " had been to the bowlers. They had not only provided the afternoon tea, but had voluntarily raised their own- annual subscriptions, besides raising about £80 by means of socials toward the club's funds. The president then presented the trophies won last season. Two uncompleted matches for Mr. N. E. Heath's trophies will be played off shortly. The first year's champion was Mr. W. T. Webster, who won the medals donated by "Mr. A. Pamsb'and the late Mr. J. Atkinson. Trophies were handed to Messrs. H. W. Wilson. A. W. Tver, C. Q-. Hodgson, and J. B. Tonar, the winners Of the percentage fours. The club championship was won by Mr. A. *pamsh, who thus became the holder of the B. G-. Skeates Cup. Mr. B. Mason was the runner-up.
