COALMINERS' DEMANDS.
WAGES IN BRITAIN. REPLY BY THE OWNERS. INCREASE IMPOSSIBLE. By Telesrapb—Prens Association—Copyright. (Received 7.30 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. Oct. 5. The National Board for the Coa.l Industry met and discussed the workers' proposals for improving the economic position of the industry, including minimum rates of wages, which, it is asked, should exceed the rate of July, 1914, by a per centage equal to the rise in the cost of living, based on the Ministry of Labour figure. The owners replied that it was quite impossible to consider any increiise. Indeed, it might be necessary shortly to consider a reduction in the present wages agreement. The workers replied that they could not leave the matter there, hut must approach the Government with a view to securing a minimum wage.

G. coalminers have filed an affidavit with the coal tribunal requesting a com ; pulsory conference with the owners with reference to the log, deficiency, and pillar questions. The conference between the miners and proprietors on the question of installing electric safety lamps hasi commenced. As the result of a compulsory conference between the Northern coalowners and the Miners' Federation, work will be resumed' at the West Wallsend colliery on Monday.
