WOMEN IN AMERICA.
INFLUENCE OF THEIR CLUBS. ffAOTOR FOR GOOD CITIZENSHIP. An interesting; address on Club Life in America was given by Dr. Mary Armor at the Women's Club yesterday afternoon. Th*>esident, Mrs. W. H. Parkes, occupied the chair. „«««,•. Dr. Armor said the growth of women s cluU in America and their influence bad been enormous in recent and tne women's movement had grown in proportion. Although most of the clubs were originally formed as social clubs, they were vital powers for civic rights, good government and child welfaws. combining these and manv other ideals m their active effort for* good citizenship. They formed one vast confederation, working to securo for women equal rights Many of the laws in America were sadly lacking in justice to women. One of the benefits derived from clubs was that women had taken life more seriously and realised their responsibility as citizens. To a large extent women had'won their freedom and it remained 'with them to see what this freedom would bring. Politically and industrially all barriers to women were do\m. They were now found in the police force, on the Bench and in Congress, in. the professions and the factories and their influence must be a power for good bo long as their freedom took them into a world of wider and finer ideals. But their power would be at an end as soon as their freedom gave them access to the vices of men. JVeedom abused would be detrimental to their power and it was well to remember that no race was ever raised above its motherhood. '
