THE DOMAIN EXCHANGE.

NEEDS OF THE HOSPITAL. ABATTOIRS EXTENSION. BILL BEFORE THE HOTJSE. f»X TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL BEPOBTEB.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. When moving the second reading of the Auckland City and Auckland Hospital Board Empowering Bill in the House tonight, the Hon. U J. Parr explained that the Bill had the joint approval pi the two bodies concerned. The first point, ho said, was that the Bill would give the Auckland City Council power to borrow £23.000 for the purpose of extending tho municipal abattoirs and without taking a poll of ratepayers under the Local Bodies' Loans Act. There was for a local body to borrow money for the purpose of erecting abattoirs without a poll of the ratepayers, but similar provision was not made in t'ne case of money being required for extensions to such buildings. The abattoirs were a paying proposition for tho municipality, but were inadequate for the growing needs of the city. The Butchers* Association was moving in this matter, and the butchers were prepared to pay additional fees, which would more than cover the interest and sinking fund on the Another point in the Bill was that the House was asked to validate an agreement between the Hospital Board and the City Council whereby the city would give four acres of land from tKe Domain in exchange for 11 acres, with a magnificent beach frontage. The people of Auckland would cain a valuable recreation ground, and it would be possible to carry out riecessary extensions to the Auckland Hospital, which was now the largfestrin Now Zea. tend. . ~ i .- The only other point was the clause which would enable the City Council to create a superannuation fund for old employees. The Bill bad been scrutinised by the Local Bills and Lands Committees. It had the full support of the two unportant local bodies concerned and ,&m was no doubt that it was in the interests of the citv generally. . . _ . The Bill was supported by Sir John Luke (Wellington North), and was read a second time.
