DISABLED SOLDIERS.

POLICY OF ASSISTANCE. Several cases of undoubted " nent war disability" wcro considered during t'iio month by the Permanently Disabled Soldiers' Board of tho Patriotic and War .Relief Association. Assistance in cases of this kind was declined by tho boaiU. It had been found either that tho disability or injury was not of sufficient degree or handicap to render the applicant eligible for assistance under the scheme, or that t'he economic position of the applicant was relatively as good or better than before active service. The refusal in all such cases was based on the policy which had been laid down from the outset, and to which it was felt in the interests of the needy applicants the funds should be so conserved. Referring to the report, which was presented to the executive of tho association yesterday! t'ho chairman, Mr. J. H. Gun-j son, remarked that the board's attitude was in accordance with the association's instructions. While it was not possible to open tho door to everyone, no needy or worthy man was ever debarred. Tho board's report showed that 25 cases were considered during the month, 11 being granted, 11 declined, and four deferred. The total amount of assistance to the 11 successful applicants amounted to £1957. The total number of cases assisted to date under the permanently disabled soldiers' scheme was 406, and the total amount of assistance authorised, to date was £86,500. j
