ASSOCIATION'S ACTIVITIES.

RELIEF DURING LAST MONTH The executive of the. Auckland Patriotic and War Relief Association met yesterday, Mr. J. H. Gunson presiding. The Claims Board reported that the number of cases considered during the month was 178. Assistance was granted in 92 cases, and 86 cases were declined. Tho total assistance granted amounted to £541, an average of almost £6. Of the 86 capes declined the majority were applications from men who wero not suffering any disability duo to war service, j Although many cases of hardship from a civil standpoint were met with, yet in view of tho fact that there were actually no war injuries, it had to be held, as in the past, that the funds woro not available for such cases. The annual report •of the Australian Imperial Forces Canteens Funds Trust was received. The report stated that the.' amount received with interest amounted to £628.498, and tho amount expended to £626.112, leaving a balance on hard of £2586. Tho trustees dealt with 44,690 applications from seriously disabled soldiers and dependants of deceased soldiers. In addition, a bequest was received from the late Sir Samuel McCaughey of £263,000, and the operations in respect to the request wero expected to cover i period of 12 years. The trust was assisting seriously disabled soldiers and their children, and tho children of deceased soldiers, and grants were being made toward education expenses of soldiers and dependants. ) A letter was received from the* Whan-1 garei Hospital Board with reference to tho ownership of a hut erected on the board's grounds by the association. II was decided to forward the correspondence to Mr. D. W. Jack, of Whangarei, | and ask him to act for tho association [ in settling the matter. | Mr. E. W. Inder was welcomed to a seat on the executive, the chairman stating that thev wero looking forward to the benefit of his services. J It was reported that the Rev. J. E.' Ward and Captain C. A. Thomas had been appointed to tho local committees at Taumarunui and Rotorua respectively. I
