BRIDGE OF REMEMBRANCE.

TASMANIAN MARBLE USED. A OHRISTCHURCH PROTEST. • [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. At a meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Association the chairman expressed regret that the architect for the brideo of remembrance memorial had specified Tasmanian stone or marble for t!|o structure. New Zealand had some of the finest marble granite that the world could produce. Of that ho had been assured by numbers of men capable of judging the position. The chairman referred to the fine qinality of the marble in the Parliamentary Buildings. That marble, which could not be excelled, was N T ew Zealand marble. "I deplore tho fact that this bridge, which is going to commemorate the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for us, is not going to be composed wholly of material got from our own country," he said. Had he known at v an earlier stage of the intention to use Tasmanian stone he would certainly have entered a protest on behalf of the Industrial Association. Mr. W. H. Winsor explained that New Zealand marble would have been too ex pensive. Tasmanian marble would be landed in the rough and t would b© cheaper than New Zealand stone, and the work of dressing it would be done in Christchurch.
