FAILURE TO APPEAR.
i» ■ INCOME TAX TROUBLE. At.the Magistrate's Court in ton last week, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., William Connon was charged with failing to.attend the office of the Income Tax Commissioner when ordered to do so. Mr. J. M. Tudhope, who prosecuted, explained that tho proceedings were taken under a section of the Land and Income Tax Act, which empowered tho Income Tax Commissioner to request the attendance of any person to give evidence as to his income, etc. The defendant had not made any income tax return for the Cast eight or nine years. Letters had eon sent to him and appointments had been made, but no satisfaction had been received from the defendant. Finally, ho had been notified to attend at the commissioner's office, but this ho had also failed to do. In view of defendant's persistent neglect, counsel pressed for a heavy penalty. Counsel for the defendant, Mr. W. Perry, said that when the notice in question had been delivered at Connon's office, the defendant himself was not present. An employee had received the message but had not handed it on. Defendant had gono down to tho Income Tax Department on Thursday last, but the officials had refused to withdraw the charge. In view of the fact that Connon was liable to a fine of £100, the magistrate decided to adjourn the case until Friday next. ,
