Replying to a letter from the board m regard "to defaulters in the matter of ir > a j n ' tenance orders, the Minister for Health advised that in this connection a resolution passed at the Hospitals Conference ui 1920 was referred to the Minister «> T Justice, who replied that where a bread* winner of a family was committed to prison it was hoped to meet the position in a practical way by making payment of wages earned by the prisoner less cost of maintenance and supervision, and that this might cover tlie case of a wife deserter committed to prison. This, however, would not affect the position while such offenders remained at large. The question was one that received the attention of the conference of th© four chief hospital boards held in Wellington last week, and when ho was notified of the result, of their deliberations h4 would be pleased to again approach his colleague on the matter.
