BIRKENHEAD REVALUATION
CRITICISM BY THE MAYOR. ■ NEW ASSESSMENT WANTED. In the course of an address to the meeting of Birkenhead ratepayers on Thursday evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Court, intimated that he would ask the Borough Council to pass the following motion at its next meeting: "That this council places on record its considered opinion that the increases allowed by the Assessment* Court, while making for a more equitable rating of the bor-' ough, still leave many inadequate and inequitable valuations; therefore, this council respectfully requests a new and correct valuation to be submitted to the council and ratepayers by the end oj 1923." Mr. Court said the Government valuer had only increased the unimproved value figures of 1914 by £15,255, or 9 per cent. The Assessment Court had granted a further increase of £20,000 in respect to Only 91 properties, which were the subject of objections by the council. The valuer had only increased the value of these since 1914 by £5450, or 3 per cent., though the council considered the increase should have been £113,434 on the 91 lots alone.
