HARDENING GLASSWARE.
The precaution ol hardening all glassware before use is well worth while, for it makes the glass much more durable. Place the glass in a pan of cold water. Bring it slowly to the boil and Chen let it cool down gradually.. To guard against any chance of bumping when the water boils, put a layer of hay, at the bottom of the pan. After this treatment glass dishes are not so liable to breakage when hot liquid is poured into them,, and they are also less likely to be injured by a knock. ' Our grandmothers were well, acquainted with this: phase of domestic economy. They always made a point of first boiling the glass chimney before putting it on'the bif lamp, and the up-to-date housewife might do worse than ' follow this old-fashioned example before using a globe for; the gas. Unless yon 4 are careful a minor defect in the incandescent man- \ tip -may lead tothe smashing o! a globe! that is too fragile.
