A young gendarme recruit when strolling near Vernon arrested a stranger without papers on suspicion of being a rogue and a vagabond. On reaching the station, two miles distant, the prisonor telephoned to the procureur. It was then ascertained that he was M. Aristide Briand, ex-Prime Minister of France. M. Briand took tho misadventure good humourcdly and entertained the gendarme in a nearby cafe.
