PILLION RIDING AT OTAHUHU.
Sir, —I was very surprised a few days since to see in your columns that % deputation had waited on the Otahuhu Borough. Council and had received a sympathetic hearing on the :matter of rescinding the new by-law relative to pillion riding. May I, as a ratepayer, point out that I for one object to unnecessary waste of our borough funds. The council at the present moment- has its complete set of new by-laws in the hands of the printers, and if this one by-law is to be rescindea, just to please a.few of the "road-hpgs" who go whistling through our village without regard to life or limb of those who get in their way, why should not the council rescind the by-laws that will not. meet the wishes of,-say, the plumbers and drainers, or any other section of the community which object to by-laws. When the council was making the new by-laws re pillion riding, then was the time for the Mayor and 'any councillor who objected to it, to have brought (evidence against its introduction, not to wait till ,the by-Jaw pinches a few and then whets, requisitioned by a minority of the public stoop to consider rescinding it* The "council will soon be held up to ridicule at not knowing their own minds in & matter like this. Your informant was wrong when he stated pillion riding is sanctioned in England. I say authoritatively that pillion riding is not allowed in a large number of counties and shires in iEnfs- - and elsewhere, too. Even if it were so, two wrongs do not make a right. Already we have several records of deaths and accidents caused through pillion riding. Let the council sticic to its guns and uphold its by-law, which is in force in many other places- as wfill as" Otahuhu. Junius.
