LIGHT ON TIRITIRI.

THE PENDING CHANGES.

A Gazette notice states that the existing red sector of the light shown from the lighthouse on Tiritiri Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, i s to be. removed at an early date. When this has been carried out the existing light will show white from all directions in which it is now visible. The future abbreviated description of this Htrht will be: Light fixed, white, visible 23 miles. The red sector mentioned shows over an arc of 22 degrees between north 13 decrrees west to north 25 degrees west, lookincr from the lighthouse, and it covers the passage between Flat Rock and Kawau Island. The sector was installed to mark the danger of Flat Rock, but since the rock has been lighted by a white flashing light, the red sector on Tiri is not now needed. It is understood that eventually the characteristic of Tiri light will be changed to an unwatched flashing light and it will then be handed over to the Harbour Board. At present there are four men on Tiri Island, two Government lighthouse keepers and two harbour board signalmen. When the light is under control of the board the two lighthouse keepers will bo withdrawn and a third signalman installed on the island.

It is reported that the mechanism of the unwatched flashing light is in New Zealand, but nothing has been announced as to when it is likely to bo installed.
