BUILDING ACTIVITIES.
POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH. | [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHUKCH. Thursday. In spite of financial ups and downs the amount of building in Christchurch keeps at a fairly steady level, both in houses and in large structures. It is a long time since there has been anything like a building boom in the city but things are in quite good order from the builder's point of view. At present " big jobs," aggregating nearly £250,000 in value, are in hand- This is not a discreditable total considering the times, but in the opinion of master builders it is about £100,000 below the normal level of building progress, judged by the pre-war standard. When more money becomes available for the development of industries' there is bound to be an increase in the building of factories. The same may be eaid of public buiUings. Owiog to the urgent need ior larger offices the Christchurch City Council is going on with its chambers in Manchester Street, but schools, including the new Boys' High School at Biccarton and the Girls' High School at Avonside, besides much-needed additions to primary schools, are being delayed until educational bodies and the Government have'more funds in hand.
