Main lines and branches 2C0.1M 179.293 Wostland 14.631 12,786 WeTtport .. .. .- 10.773 6.93» Kploti 2.019 2,511 pfrton :: :. ... 3.366 3,055 Lsio Wakatipu steamers 631 1.297 Totals .- ..£231.706 £204.858 Grand totals . • £518.376 £462,715 The returns for the eight weeks of the current financial year show that in the North Island the working expenses absorbed 84.64 per cent, of the revenue, as compared with 89.50 per cent, last year, but the improvement was .wholly oti the Main Trunk system, all the'other sections showing wprse results. In the South Island the ratio of expenses was 86.41 per cent., in comparison with 101.63 per cent, last year, the improvement in the main line system and the Westport and Picton sections offsetting increased losses slsewhere.
