At a meeting of the Tauranga Hospital Board the Director-General of Health wrote forwarding th«> consent of the Mmieter to the boiird borrowing £2500 for a term ox five years at per cent., with £500 per annum to be provided as sinking fund ? also consent to borrowing £12,500 for 10 years at per cent., with two per cent, pear annum as sinking fund. Mr. Lally said ho considered that the rate of 6£ per cent, vraa too nigh. Mr. Hume thought it would be better to combine and raise a large loan of, say, £100,000 for iiiads, electricity, and hospital purposes. The new hospital and site would run into about £20,000. The board decided to defer the matter until the next meeting. The secretary of North Canterbury Hospital Board, Christcburch, wrote a.3 follows: " This board's attention has been called to the fact that cases of senile dementia are being housisd in mental hospitals, and it haa been pointed out that these institutions are hardly suitable for dealing with such cases. The board is also of that opinion, but does not regard it as the duty of hospital boards to make provision, as provision is made in the Mental Defectives Act, 1911, for the care of this type of individual. Representations have been made to tho Government, suggesting that special provision should be made, and pointing out that for the South Island there iu a Government institution at Shirley which is nof-being used, and which would be eminently suitable for the purple. I am directed to ask if your board will support tha proposal and make representation to the Government that cases o f seniln dementia should be housed in institutions other than mental hospitals or gaols." Tlie board unanimously agreed to support the request. The board discussed the question of a site for the proposed new hospital at Tauranga, 15 sites bm K offered.
