H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND.
Sir,— May I make a plea for H.M.S. New Zealand? It seems to me to be a sinful waste to destroy such a beautiful and costly vessel, to say nothing of her having taken part in the Jutland battle. In the Auckland Harbour we often see numerous ships riding at anchor for months at a time, and, I presume, at no cost to the Harbour Board or the Government. Would it bo a wildly impossible scheme for the people to have H.M.S. New Zealand there as well ? There are innumerable commercial uses to which such a ship could be put if required, particularly in the summer. I hope I may be wrong, but I have an idea that some day we may be glad of all the defensive material that can be requisitioned at short notice- in spite of world disarmament. I certainly cannot see anv reason why H.M.S. New Zealand cannot be kept in our own waters, like the old Victory, even if it is only as a flagship for the annual regattas. Godfrey E. Webster.
