THE TUATARA.
Sir,—ln the Heiuld of May 4in refer- j ence to the tuatara, M. J- Gannon | suggests that it would be of scientific interest to.know of any instance of thetuatara living in its natural state Qn the mainland of New Zealand. Over 20 years ago I had a conversation with an old Maori about the tuatara. He said that at one time it lived at Taupo, but was then extinct. He suggested that fires that spread through the fern among tho rocks Mas partlv responsible, and the pig introduced by Captain Cook. He also told mo of a Maori who ivas named from a fright ho received through coming suddenly upon a tuatara. H, J. Fletcher.
