REGULAR AIR SERVICES.
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL.
UP-TO-DATE MACHINES.
[FKO-M OUR- OffX CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY. May 3. Arrangements are now well in hand for the inauguration of the aerial mail, passenger, and freight service between Adelaide, Sydney, and Brisbane, via the Riverina. and east coast. The Handasyde monoplanes which are being used are the last word in aeronautical design, nothing approaching them having been seen in Australia previously. These machines, which are fitted with Rolls-Royce engines of 360-h.p., have been specially designed for use on the London-Paris service, and embody the improvements found desirable after two years' experience. Accommodation is provided for six passengers in a wellappointed and comfortably-fitted saloon. Full-length windows are provided, and a fire-proof bulkhead separates the engine compartment from the remainder of tht> machine. Mails, luggage, and light freight are carried in a special compartment "between the engine and the passengers. The under-carriagc has been designed on entirely new lines to meet the requirements of commercial ai r transport. Cantilever wings, with multi-spars, and covered with two-ply wood skin are a great improvement on any lifting surface fitted to an aeroplane. The engine, radiator, etc., are mounted on a detachable mounting, which allows of a complete replacement in less than two hours. Special attention has been paid to the requirements of Australian conditions.
