RICHMOND THOROUGHFARE. HERNE BAY CONNECTION. PETITIONS AND WORKS. The City Council met last evening, the > Mayor, Mr, J. H. Gunson, presiding. There were also present -. Miss E. Melville, Messrs. G. Bennett, J. W. Hardley, and M. J. Savage, M.F. i A road connection between Richmond • and the Heme B&v side of Cox s Creek was recently asked'for by_ 48 residents of the former district. Reporting on the matter, the city engineer, Mr. W. E. ! Bush, stated that the best course would be to use the reserve at the point mentioned as a tip for clinker from the city destructor, so as to form a temporary roadway. The bridge at the sawmill would also have to be repaired and i strengthened. \\ hen a sufficient bed of clinker had been deposited, the track . could be railed and made into an accommodation road to connect Richmond and Wharf Roads, and, on the south side, to ' connect with the Grey Lynn portion of West End Road. 1 It was decided that the work should , be proceeded with on those lines. ! A petition from 56 Remuera residents asking for the removal of the council's ' depot at the corner of Remuera and Wa-i- ---' rere Roads was reported upon by the - Works Committee. It was decided to in--1 form the petitioners that the council is ; using the site only temporarily, during the progress of the special works in the
Remuera district. The Mayor mentioned that tho works in question would bo finished in four weeks. The ritv sinking fund commissioners wrote asking for an enlargement of their powers in the investment of funds, particularly as to investing £25,000 in the purchase of 6 per cent, debentures issued l)v the Harbour Board. The- necessary authority was granted. At the request of the Moint Albert Borough Council it was agreed that the outward tramway stop at the far side of Gladstone Road should be removed to the city side thereof. A recommendation from the Electricity and Tramways Committee that in the matter of tramway employees' holidays the terms of awards and agreements be adhered to was adopted. Authority was given for the repair of the asphalt courts in Victoria Park, at an estimated cost of £55. The medical oflver of health notified the council that a nropertv in Wellesley Street West was unfit for use or occupation by reason of its condition. He ordered its demolition. The chief city sanitary inspector. Mr. T. Hnvnes. rejvirted that the premises in nuestion were in a very dilapidated condition. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. The city solicitor. Mr. J. Stanton, ad vised that the coum il had no legal powei to pay wages to employees (excepting the tramway men. who are affected by ar award) for Anzac Pay. The committee of the whole council re ported on tho suggestion that a medica officer of health for the city be appointed It stated that notwithstanding the desir ability of removing the present, overlappin; this result would not be obtained unde the existing statutes. The committee therefore, recommended that, no action b< taken. The recommendation was adopted The next ordinary meeting was fixed fo I three weeks hence.
