EX-IMPERIAL SOLDIERS.
m • PROVIDING ASSISTANCE. QUESTION OF RESPONSIBILITY. [by telegeaph.-press association.] CHP.ISTCHURCH. Friday. At the annual meeting of tile Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr. T. L. Drummond, touchin? on immigration, said he would always welcome newcomers to New Zealand, but h« would support no policy that would bring immigrants to the country at the expense of New Zealanders. He was strongly opposed to any patriotic money belonging to New Zealand soldiers being devoted to the sustenance of immigrant* who, as soon as they arrived in the coun try, had practically to fall back upon charity. An ex-Imperial soldier expressed the conviction that ex-Imperial men who fell J upon bad times in New Zealand shoulc be provided for bv the Imperial Govern jment, and he hoped the Returned Sol diers' Association would work to ensurt that state of affairs. The speaker spok< verv highly of the kindness with whicl ex-Imperial men had been received by th< New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Assoeia tion. Another speaker said New Zealand so", diers had been so well treated in England that they could not do too much for the ex-Imperial men when Ihoy came to this country.
