NORTHCOTE CARNIVAL.

CORONATION OF "QUEEN."

PICTURESQUE CEREMONY.

The crowning of (he " Fire Queen." Miss Verona Devlin, in connection with the Noi'thcote Fire Brigade's Queen Carnival, organised for the purpose of purchasing of a motor fire-engine, took place on Saturday evening, on the lawns adjoining the Noi'thcote Hotel. A dais was erected in the grounds, on which the " throno," and over 60 participants ii! the ceremony, were accommodated. The grounds were lighted with incandescent gas lamps, small electric light glohes being very effectively used for the various stage illuminations.

There was a large attendance, The Mayor of the borough, Mr. W. E. Richardson, presided at the concert, which preceded the coronation. Mr. E. Parker's orchestra provided the music, and the items were contributed by Madame Jean Kilmartin, Misses Ebba Gunman, Connie Lepper, Marjory and Kathleon Dalrymple, Rosa Sachs, Billie Walker, Rua Butler, Allie Deacon, and Messrs. W, K. A. Stewart and Broadribb.

The staging of the coronation pageant reflected great credit upon the Misses E. and W. Gillibrand, who organised and supervised the arrangements- The procession, in which the various handsome costumes were effectively displayed, and the ceremony throughout, was characterised by tho dignified bearing of the respective performers. The opening coronation dance, by 16 young ladies, made a striking scene, while tho evolutions of the performers, whose headgear was garlanded with electric globes, were generally admired, and their introductory item was greeted with applause. The procession having reached the dais, the various phases of the coronation -ceremony were enacted. The crown, upon being placed on the head of the " Queen " by Ihe " Archbishop," was displayed to advantage by tiny electric globes, resembling many-coloured and sparkling jewels. The whole scene was a spectacular and musical success.
