THE TRADE OF SAMOA.
EXPORTS AND IMPORTS.
The matter of Samoan trade was brought under the notice of the council of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon in a letter from Mr. R. Burns. He enclosed returns forwarded to his firm, from Samoa. The returns showed that for the calendar year 1921 the steamer Pacific took away 6400 tons of copra for Denmark. This shipment would appear in the 1922 returns. The total imports for 1921 were valued 'it £408,892, and the exports at £241,53fi. For the year 1920 the figures were: Imports £561,153, exports £386,587. The correspondent pointed out that if the value of the copra, say £120,000, were added to the 1921 exports it would bring the total to £361,539, and the exports would still remain short of the imports, The estimated revenue from customs in 1921 was given es £88,325, and the amount received for the nine months ended December 31 was £59,149. January, February, and March had therefore to bring in £29,176 to make up the estimate. Of thia sum £6400 was accounted for by the expprt duty on the copra, shipped by the Pacific, but the writer said he was sure the balance of £22,776 would not b.e collected. The secretary, Mr. H. C. Tewsley, said that Mr, Burns' object in forwarding the figures was to show the diversion of Saanoan tnwla. The matter was rofomxJ to ths JSxgort a&d Prodace .dunmitU*.
