EX-ENEMY COUNTRIES. i POLICY OF PROTECTION. A. and N. 7. MELBOURNE. March 18. The Minisser for Customs, addressing the Chamber of Commerce, explained that the Commonwealth's tardiness in resuming trade relations with ex-enemy countries was not due to vindictiveness, but to a desiie to protect and encourage local industries. Australia's geographical isolation, which was emphasised the war, together with the present economic conditions of some countries overseas, had compelled the Government to give adequate protection to local industries.
