PUBLIC WORKS TENDERS.
CONDITIONS OF CALLING. ( ! MANUMOTUEEKS COMPLAIN Representations were made by the Manufacturers' Association yesterday to the Minister for Publio Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, regarding tho manner in which tenders were called for the supply of material to his department. Mr. R. R. Hunt explained that what was desired was that the tenders should bo advertised for in such a way as to render it possible to obtain estimates from England, by mail if necessary. It sometimes happened that the contracts were advertised just after an overseas mail had left and the tenders closed before replies could be obtained from England. It happened sometimes also that Wellington business men gained an advantage through having access to specifications earlier than tho other centres. These matters had, been the subject of correspondence with the department and they now wished to bring them before the Minister. Mr. Coatcs said that if the matter was put before him in writing he would eiv« it very careful consideration. The Wellington manufacturers were apparently satisfied, but if the other centres were not he would endeavour to set matters
right. Mr. J. A. C. AHitm was associated with Mr. Hunt, while Mr. V. H. Potter, M.P., introduced them.
