MR. ANDERSON IN WAIKATO.
THE SCHOOLS OF MINES. [by te^oeaph.—OWN correspondent.] KMIILTON, Tuesday.
The Hon. J. G. Anderson, Minister for Mines, accompanied by Mr. A. H., Jfimbeii, unier-secre'-ary, and Mr. R. F. Bollard, M.P. for Raglan, arrived in Hamilton from Himtly this Evening. A deputation from the Waihi and Waikino schools of mines waitfid upon the Minister, and were introduced by Mr. H. Poland. M.P. for Ohinemuri. Messrs. J, A Young, M.P., and R. F. Bollard s M.P., were also present This y&ir the Waihi Borough Council has decided to discontinue its Bubsidy of £200 to the which carried with it a Government subsidy of £200, and the deputation asked the Minister to find the full £400
Tho Minister said lie was unable to 'do this, but was willing to grant a subsidy on a £ for £ basis on any money collected. He said he was unable to give anything unless they could show they were doing something to help themselves, He said also that it was not unreasonable to ask the students to pay more for their tuition, and local bodies should rocognise their duty and contribute something. He urged them to make an effort on their own behalf, and to report to him latei? when he would say what he would jjo. Yesterday the Minister and party inspected the new State coalmine at Waikokowaj and the mines at Pukemiro and Rotowaro. At Pukemiro a deputation urged that a doctor should be appointed there and at Rotowaro, A recast was raised for a school, it being pointed Oat that there were already 60 children to start one. The Minister promised to refer these matters to the Ministers concerned. Mr. Anderson left for Wellington by last night's express.
MB. GOATES IN THE NORTH.
A BUSY WEEK-END. [BX TELEGRAPH.—I'BESS association.] DAMAVILLE. Tuesday. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Public Works, had a busy time here over the week-end. On Saturday he opened the Northern Wairoa Show at Arapohue, on Monday he opened a new post office at Te Kopuru, and in the evening spent an hour receiving deputations. Also, together with departmental officers, he held a consultation with v the Hobson County Council in connection with grants for works in the county appearing on the Estimates. Later in the evening he attended the Jersey Club's dinner, where, in response to a toast, he gave a very interesting address on some of the questions of tne day. He left this afternoon for Kirikopuni and the North Auckland Main Trunk line works.
The Hon. E. P. Lee, Minister for Justice and Industries and Commerce, will arrive in Auckland on Friday morning, He will stay at the Grand Hotel. fair William Herriee, member of the Executive Council without portfoljo, arrived from Wellington yesterday.
