CHEMISTS' CONFERENCE.

YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS.

The annual conference of the New Zealand Pharmaceutical Society was continued yesterday under the presidency of Mr. F." Castle (Wellington). It was resolved to send a letter of sympathy to Mr. P. M. Mackay, of Auckland, who was unable to attend through illness.

Discussions arose on the reports _of the action taken on various matters by the Pharmacy Board of the Chemists' Defence Association. The conference reiterated its demand that dispensing in hospitals should only be undertaken by qualified chemists. ' On the motion of the Wellington delegate, a resolution was carried calling for an amendment to tha Pharmacy Act, compelling chemists and enrolled managers to display a certificate of registration. A Canterbury remit recommending to the Pharmacy Board tho encouragement of apprentices to take lectures in first aid was amended so that the recommendation should bo. made to tlie > master chemists and chemists' assistants 1 guilds. Arising from a Wellington remit, the conference approved- of the action taken bv individual chemists in refusing to market goods not approved by their divisions. , Discussion took place on an Auckland remit urging that tne formation of a Proprietary Articles Traders Association should be. forwarded with greater vigour. It was explained that the organisation was founded some two years ago to protect the interests of the retailers in respect of the prices of proprietary articles, but owing to the position under the anti-profiteering legislation its operations were suspended. The'remit was carried, the chairman expressing the opinion that in view of tho desirable and legitimate aims of the association tho Board of Trade probably would not take up an unreasonable attitude. Tho conference endorsed the remit of the Auckland division favouring an amendment of the law to enable Sunday hours for chemists to be fixed by requisi* tion, In the evening a lantern lecture on "Serums and Vaccine" was given by Mr. F. fi. Armitage, Government bacteriologist. " i To-day the delegates and a large company of invited guests will be entertained on a harbour excursion, arranged by the Aucliland division.
