SANDERS CUP CONTEST.

CITIZENS' CONGRATULATIONS.

The congratulations of the citizens of Auckland were convoyed to the owners and crew of tho Desert Gold by tho Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunsop, last evening, when presenting the prizes won at the recent Auckland anniversary regatta. Mr. Gunson said the citizens were delighted at the result of tho Sanders Cup contest, and it wag a source of gratification to know thai the cup was coming back to Auckland. Ho mentioned that he held in trust about £2000 which had been subscribed fori a memorial to Lieut.-Com-mander Sanders, and ho thought there would shortly bo proposals for the establishment of a memorial to this great sailor, whose memory was held in such high regard. (Applause.) Reference was also made to the contest by Mr. J. H, Frater, chairman of tlio Regatta Committee, who said it was a matter of congratulation to Auckland yachtsmen that Desert Gold had been able to restore tho cup to this city. He was sure the sporting spirit of tho men and their conduct throughout the tour and tho racing was highly appreciated by all local yacntsmon.
