FEDERAL BY-ELECTION.
LABOUR RETAINS YARRA SEAT. I Australian and N-Z Cable Association. (Reed. 7.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 19. Mr. Scullin, ' the Labour candidate, secured an absolute majority at the election to fill the Yarra vacancy, caused by the death of Mr. F. G. Tudor, late 1 Leader of the Federal Labour Party. INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE. ANOTHER LABOUR REJECTION. ADELAIDE. Feb. 19. The Labour Council resolved against participating in the Round-tablo Industrial Conference, summoned by Mr. Hughes. . MELBOURNE, Feb. 18. Mr. Hughes announces that the economic conference will be opened at Sydney on Wednesday, when 30 organisations representing capital and labour will bt represented. MOUNT MORGAN SETTLEMENT.' BRISBANE. Feb. 18. The Mount Morgan dispute has ended. At a compulsory conference of. owners with the Government it was decided to increase the subsidy and to ask the Arbitration Court to reduce wages to an ] amount mutually agreed upon. 250.000 SHEEP DROWNED. BRISBANE, Feb. 18. It is estimated that 250,000 sheep perished during the recent floods in the Longreach district. FEDERAL DEFENCE ECONOMIES. MELBOURNE, Feb. 18. The Federal Cabinet is considering proposals for defence economies, including reduction of the staff corps by one-third, suspension of cadet training, and suspension of air force development for the current year. WESTERN AUSTRALIAN WHEAT. PERTH. Feb. 18. The State wheat harvest is expected to yield 13,304,000 bushels, 1,303,000 below last year's yield. TIRTSOHKE MURDER TRIAL. MELBOURNE. Feb. 18. The trial of Colin Campbell Ross, on ;i charge of murdering Alma Tirtschke, a 13.yw old girl, at*i'te on Monday.
