NIHOTUPU WATER SUPPLY.
THE 20th ANNIVERSARY.
The Anckland City Council auxiliary water supply from Nihotupu—the first supply from the ranges—was turned on 20 years ago to-day. For some time before this anxiously-awaited event m the summer of 1902 dry weather had caused a wrious shortage of water in the city, tlie Western Springs then being the solo source of supply. Not only was tne use of hoses prohibited but the supply of water for lifts had been discontinued, while the entire service was cut off at night. When ihe water from Nihotupu was turned into the Western Springs, on February 20, the water in tho pond »t the springs wa3 39in. below the overflow, and it wlaa falling at tho rato of an inch a day.
