Thursday. , Tho Band Contest was continued to- , day, the results being as follow :— ,| Second B Grade Selection ("Madamo , Butterfly").—Palmerston North Municipal, ~146; 4th Wellington Regiment, Now Ply ,; mouth, 142; Mastertou Municipal, 140; I Wellington Patriotic Society 137. The i other competitors were:—Nelson Silver , Band 132; Hamilton Municipal, 130; Mar- .' ton Municipal, 131; Westport Garrison, •|135; Hawera Citizens', 134; Christchurch j Tramways, 135. "I feel a bit more cheerjful about things to-night, anyway," said i the adjudicator, amid cheers from tho bandsmen and others. He wont on to say that in his opinion "Madame Butterfly" was a difficult tost— too difficult, he thought, for B-grade bands. This remark from the judge also met with enthusiastic applause. Mr. Shugg added that some of tho contesting bands had done vory good work. Following are the aggregate points gained by the various bands in the two test selections. The judge said it had been very difficult to pick the winner, Many 'players attempted 6olos beyond their capacity. The players who obtained the first and second places were real bass soloists. ■Baritone Solo (own selection).—J. Williams (Woolston), 93; R. Boyd (Wellington Garrison), 91; M. McKenzie (Hamilton) 89. Also competed: P. Ryan (Wellington Garrison) 84, R. Brundall (Christchurch Tramways) 86, R. Sinclair (Auckland Artillery) did not finish. J. Maybury (Canterbury Mounted Rifles) 88, C. 'Greening (Palmerston North) 84, C. Armstrong (Whakataiie) did not finish, W. Hall (Wellington Tramways) 60, H. Kimbele (Invercargill Hibernian) 88. The judge said some of the efforts had not been bad at all. The range in many cases had been excellent, bnt all round there had been an apparent lack of expression.
