CHEQUES NOT ENTERED.
ACCUSED ADMITS DEFICIENCY.-,

Charged with the theft of £79 belonging to the New Zealand Government, Arthnr G. Laurenson, who for some time held the position of manager of State firewood depot, and was lately actingmanager of the State coal depot, ap. peared in tho Magistrate's Court to-day. Alfred Henry Kimball, Under-Secre-tary for the Mines Department, Baid that on January 25 last he received a lettei from tho accused explaining a deficiency that had occurred, and asking for lenient treatment.
Charles oair. audit inspector, said on January 18. while auditing the books of the City Council, lie discovered a voucher for firewood supplied by the Government firewood depot. The voucher had been receipted, but no official receipt was attached. As a result he made an examination of the firewood depot looks and discovered that the cheque paid by the City Council had not been entered in the cash book. Witness later discovered that other cheques had not been entered.
Accused pleaded guilty to the charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
