THE MANGAHAO STRIKE.
NO SETTLEMENT REACHED. CONTRACTS AS ALTERNATIVE [by telegraph.—own CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The tunnellers who went on strike ai Mangahao against the reduction of their earnings under the Public Expenditure Adjustment Act have not effected any settlement with the Public Works Dbpartmont. They havo declared, through their representatives in Wellington, that they will not accept the reduction, and the department has pointed, in reply, to the explicit provisions of the Act, requiring that the wages and salaries oi all employees of the State shall ba reduced on a fixed scale. The striker* and the department therefore are at. a dsadlock and the important, tunnelling opera ticms at Mangahao are held np. The department, failing a quick settlement, will proceed to call tenders for the completion of the tunnels under tie cooperative contract system. The men whe have been on th e job will be able to present tenders if they wish to do so. The successful contractors will undertakd to find the labour for the completion of the tunnels, the department iinding plant and materials.
