TEACHERS' SALARIES.
EXTENT OF REDUCTIONS. COMPARISON WITH FARMERS Some remarks on the subject of the reductions in teachers' salaries were made at the Auckland Education Board's meeting yesterday by the chairman, Mr. F. C. Banks. The board went into committee to discuss the 'subject of 6alary reductions, and on resuming Mr. Bunks made a public statement. Speaking generally, he said, the reduction was a small one, amounting to about £25 a year on salaries upto £800 and £15 on lower salaries. The reduction amounted to about 3 per oent., but if the coet of living went down 2 or 3 per cent, between now and June a further reduction might be made on the basis of the figures of the Arbitration Court. A further decrease in the cost of living between June and September might mean another salary reduction, possibly bringing the total reduction to 9 per cent. Mr. Banks drew a comparison between the economic position of tho teacher and that of the dairy-farmer. Last year the producers received 32d per lb. for butterfat. Now the price was 13d. If anyone was discontented with the reductions let him multiply his salary by 13 and divide it by 32. By 60 doing no would see where the man who produced butter-fat stood today.
