FIRE BLIGHT QUARANTINE.
VOTE FOR COMPENSATION. RECOGNITION OF JUST CLAIMS. CbT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.) CHEISTCHURCH. Tuesday. The vote of £2108 on the Supplementary Estimates for compensation to nurserymen in connection with fire blight prevention measures was referred to by Mr. George A. Green, secretary and organiser of the New Zealand Association of Nurserymen, to-day. He expressed pleasure that the long outstanding claims had received recognition from Parliament. They were made by nurserymen whose clean stock was Quarantined and was subsequently lost through the delay that took place in dealing with fire blight. Although only about one-third of the loss had been made good, etill the action of the Government and of Parliament in passing the vote for compensation was recognition that the claims made- were just. About seven nurseries were prevented from selling i their trees, for which they held a clean Government certificate. An unfortunate j element in connection with the quarantine was that it was enforced in June, the month when the selling season starts.
