RATS IN CHRISTCHURCH.
— ♦ MANIFESTO TO CITIZENS. The first of a series of manifestos designed to educate citizens concerning Uw importance of exterminating rats as the best precaution to prevent the entry of plague has been issued by the Mayor oi Christchurch, Dr. H. T. J. Thacker. The manifesto explains in popular language the part the rat plays in spreading the disease, and contains a series of injunctions and exhortations relating to refuse tins and rubbish accumulations. It is stated that uncovered tins allow the rats to procure food and nesting material and make them less likely to take the poisoned bait spread where required for their consumption an] destructian. Warnings are issued tha'. prosecutions will follow in all cases whure tins we found to be uncovered o: vsuere rubbish or garbage aro allowed to accumulate, and so become a danger and a nuisance. To assist the householder in conforming to the regulations, the Christchurch City Council will supply at cost pries and deliver free standard bins or extra covers, and will for a fortnight remove free from any city premises any accumulation of rubbish.
